Oral Diseases

Oral diseases can generally be expressed as lesions around the mouth and / or lips.

It should not be forgotten that the first signs of many systemic diseases are seen in the mouth .

It should be kept in mind that oral wounds can be overlooked when painless, and routine dental visits should not be neglected. However, the lesion that continues in the mouth for more than 14 days must be shown to a dentist and evaluated.

Jaw Joint Disorders

Jaw joint disorders are caused by problems in the chewing muscles and/or structures that make up the jaw joint.

The most common clinical manifestations are as follows:

  • Pain when chewing
  • Difficulty and pain in opening the mouth
  • Limitation of mouth opening
  • Locking the mouth closed or open
  • Sounds such as clicks, squeaks when opening and closing the mouth
  • Neck pain
  • Headache
  • Earache
  • Sliding to the side of the chin when opening and closing the mouth

Possible causes of jaw joint diseases can be counted as tooth clenching-grinding, excessive tooth loss, unilateral chewing habit, faulty prostheses, trauma, orthodontic disorders.

The aim of treatment is primarily to eliminate the causes. For this, the following treatments are applied.

  • Psychiatric support
  • Physical therapy
  • Drug treatment
  • Splint therapy
  • Exercises
  • Advanced interventional therapies

Patients with jaw joint discomfort, if needed, to get help with stress management, will tire the jaw joint; chewing gum, eating large bites and eating unilaterally.

Jaw Cysts

Jaw cysts can be related to tooth structures, as well as originate from a completely different origin.

Although there are usually no symptoms, problems in the tooth and / or gums, discharge in the mouth, bad smell and taste, painless swelling noticed in the jaw or tooth edge are common complaints.

In advanced cases, pathological fractures due to inability to open the mouth, loss of sensation in the jaw and bone loss may be encountered.

The first diagnosis of jaw cysts is made by intraoral x-rays. In further examinations, computed tomography is used to determine the extent of bone destruction and to plan appropriate treatment.

In cases where there is difficulty in making a diagnosis with imaging methods, biopsy is the gold standard in definitive diagnosis.

Cysts are treated surgically.

If the tooth cysts are not operated on time, depending on the growth of their size, they can damage the surrounding anatomical and cause serious problems.

Root Tip Resection

Root tip resection means that the root tip is shortened from the appropriate area in order to treat the pathological formation present at the root end of the tooth and to eliminate the agent.

  • In the presence of lesions that do not heal at the root end despite root canal treatment
  • In the presence of constantly renewing pain or infection in the root canal treated teeth
  • In order to keep the teeth affected by jaw cysts in the mouth
  • In anatomical or pathological conditions that prevent a healthy root canal treatment

apical (root tip) resection may be preferred.

The aim is to ensure that the tooth that has lost its health functions healthily in the mouth without being extracted.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the most common group of teeth that cause eruption problems today. Wisdom teeth may never have formed. It can also be found completely or partially embedded in the jawbone or simply embedded in the mucosa.

Impacted wisdom teeth;

  • Infection
  • Ear and jaw joint pain
  • Swelling
  • Cysts

cause.

The necessary treatment approach is decided by considering the position in the jawbone, the age of the patient, the problems caused by the relevant tooth.

Orthognathic Surgery

Some structural disorders in the jaw (congenital or developmental) may not be solved by orthodontic treatment alone. In these cases, some surgical interventions may be required after orthodontic treatment. Orthognathic surgery, surgeries are usually performed after the age of 17-18 years due to the completion of development. However, with the necessary orthodontic treatment, it can be started with the complete removal of permanent teeth.

  • Positioning of the lower or upper jaw in the forward dimension, forward or behind.
  • Facial aesthetics
  • Speech, chewing, swallowing disorders
  • Issues such as respiratory problems

Orthognathic surgery may be an appropriate treatment option.

Orthognathic surgery is a multidisciplinary approach. Treatment begins with the treatment of carious teeth, ensuring oral hygiene, and eliminating gum problems, if any.Orthodontic treatment continues to bring the teeth to the ideal position. After all these treatments, orthognathic surgery is applied.
